My Take: If you hear God speak audibly, you (usually) aren't crazy ...

Editor's Note:?Tanya Marie (?T.M.?) Luhrmann is a psychological anthropologist and the Watkins University professor in the department of anthropology at Stanford University in Stanford, California. She is the author of "When God Talks Back: Understanding the American Evangelical Relationship with God."

By T.M. Luhrmann, Special to CNN

(CNN)?In the Bible, God spoke directly to Abraham. He spoke directly to Moses. He spoke directly to Job. But to your neighbor down the street?

Most people reading the ancient scriptures understand these accounts of hearing God?s voice as miracles that really did happen but no longer take place today, or maybe as folkloric flourishes to ancient stories. Even Christians who believe that miracles can be an everyday affair can hesitate when someone tells them they heard God speak audibly. There?s an old joke: When you talk to God, we call it prayer, but when God talks to you, we call it schizophrenia.

Except that usually it?s not.

Hearing a voice when alone, or seeing something no one else can see, is pretty common. At least one in 10 people will say they?ve had such an experience if you ask them bluntly. About four in 10 say they have unusual perceptual experiences between sleep and awareness if you interview them about their sleeping habits.

Follow the CNN Belief Blog on Twitter

And if you ask them in a way that allows them to admit they made a mistake, the rate climbs even higher. By contrast, schizophrenia, the most debilitating of all mental disorders, is pretty rare. Only about one in 100 people can be diagnosed with the disorder.

Moreover, the patterns are quite distinct. People with schizophrenia who hear voices hear them frequently. They often hear them throughout the day, sometimes like a rain of sound, or a relentless hammer. They hear not only sentences, but paragraphs: words upon words upon words. What the voices say is horrid?insults, sneers and contemptuous jibes. ?Dirty. You?re dirty.? ?Stupid slut.? ?You should?ve gone under the bus, not into it.?

That was not what Abraham, Moses and Job experienced, even when God was at his most fierce.

For the last 10 years, I have been doing anthropological and psychological research among experientially oriented evangelicals, the sort of people who seek a personal relationship with God and who expect that God will talk back. For most of them, most of the time, God talks back in a quiet voice they hear inside their minds, or through images that come to mind during prayer. But many of them also reported sensory experiences of God. They say God touched their shoulder, or that he spoke up from the back seat and said, in a way they heard with their ears, that he loved them. Indeed, in 1999, Gallup reported that 23% of all Americans had heard a voice or seen a vision in response to prayer.

These experiences were brief: at the most, a few words or short sentences. They were rare. Those who reported them reported no more than a few of them, if that. These experiences were not distressing, although they were often disconcerting and always startling. On the contrary, these experiences often made people feel more intimate with God, and more deeply loved.

In fact, my research has found that these unusual sensory experiences are more common among those who pray in a way that uses the imagination?for example, when prayer involves talking to God in your mind. The unusual sensory experiences were not, in general, associated with mental illness (we checked).

They were more common among those who felt comfortable getting caught up in their imaginations. They were also more common among those who prayed for longer periods. Prayer involves paying attention to words and images in the mind, and giving them significance. There is something about the skilled practice of paying attention to the mind in this way that shifts?just a little bit?the way we judge what is real.

Yet even many of these Christians, who wanted so badly to have a back-and-forth relationship with God, were a little hesitant to talk about hearing God speak with their ears. For all the biblical examples of hearing God speak audibly, they doubt. Augustine reports that when he was in extremis, sobbing at the foot of that fig tree, he heard a voice say, ?Take it and read.? He picked up the scripture and converted. When the Christians I know heard God speak audibly, it often flitted across their minds that they were crazy.

In his new book, "Hallucinations," the noted neurologist Oliver Sacks tells his own story about a hallucinatory experience that changed his life. He took a hearty dose of methamphetamines as a young doctor, and settled down with a 19th century book on migraines. He loved the book, with its detailed observation and its humanity. He wanted more. As he was casting around in his mind for someone who could write more that he could read, a loud internal voice told him ?You silly bugger? that it was he. So he began to write. He never took drugs again.

Now, Sacks does not recommend that anyone take drugs like that. He thinks that what he did was dangerous and he thinks he was lucky to have survived.

What interests me, however, is that he allowed himself to trust the voice because the voice was good. There?s a distinction between voices associated with psychiatric illness (often bad) and those (often good) that are found in the so-called normal population. There?s another distinction between those who choose to listen to a voice, if the advice it gives is good, and those who do not. When people like Sacks hear a voice that gives them good advice, the experience can transform them.

CNN?s Belief Blog: The faith angles behind the biggest stories

This is important, because often, when voices are discussed in the media or around the kitchen table, the voices are treated unequivocally as symptoms of madness. And of course, voice-hearing is associated with psychiatric illness.

But not all the time. In fact, not most of the time.

About a third of the people I interviewed carefully at the church where I did research reported an unusual sensory experience they associated with God. While they found these experiences startling, they also found them deeply reassuring.

Science cannot tell us whether God generated the voice that Abraham or Augustine heard. But it can tell us that many of these events are normal, part of the fabric of human perception. History tells us that those experiences enable people to choose paths they should choose, but for various reasons they hesitate to choose.

When the Rev.?Martin Luther King Jr. sat at his kitchen table, in the winter of 1956, terrified by the fear of what might happen to him and his family during the Montgomery bus boycott, he said he heard the voice of Jesus promising, ?I will be with you.? He went forward.

Voices may form part of human suffering. They also may inspire human greatness.

On July 30, 2012, in the Banner Health System case, the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), issued a decision holding that a hospital violated Section 8(a)(1) of the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA) by asking employees who had filed a complaint not to discuss it with co-workers while the investigation was pending.

Early cognitive problems documented among those who eventually get Alzheimer's

Dec. 28, 2012 ? People who study or treat Alzheimer's disease and its earliest clinical stage, mild cognitive impairment (MCI), have focused attention on the obvious short-term memory problems. But a new study suggests that people on the road to Alzheimer's may actually have problems early on in processing semantic or knowledge-based information, which could have much broader implications for how patients function in their lives.

Terry Goldberg, PhD, a professor of psychiatry and behavioral science at the Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine and director of neurocognition at the Litwin Zucker Center for Research in Alzheimer's Disease and Memory Disorders at The Feinstein Institute for Medical Research in Manhasset, NY, said that clinicians have observed other types of cognitive problems in MCI patients but no one had ever studied it in a systematic way. Many experts had noted individuals who seemed perplexed by even the simplest task. In this latest study, published in this month's issue of the American Journal of Psychiatry, investigators used a clever series of tests to measure a person's ability to process semantic information.

Do people with MCI have trouble accessing different types of knowledge? Are there obvious semantic impairments that have not been picked up before? The answer was "yes."

In setting out to test the semantic processing system, Dr. Goldberg and his colleagues needed a task that did not involve a verbal response. That would only confuse things and make it harder to interpret the results. They decided to use size to test a person's ability to use semantic information to make judgments between two competing sets of facts. "If you ask someone what is bigger, a key or an ant, they would be slower in their response than if you asked them what is bigger, a key or a house," explained Dr. Goldberg. The greater the difference in size between two objects, the faster a person -- normal or otherwise -- can recognize the difference and react to the question.

Investigators brought in 25 patients with MCI, 27 patients with Alzheimer's and 70 cognitively fit people for testing. They found large differences between the healthy controls and the MCI and Alzheimer's patients. "This finding suggested that semantic processing was corrupted," said Dr. Goldberg. "MCI and AD (Alzheimer's disease) patients are really affected when they are asked to respond to a task with small size differences."

They then tweaked the task by showing pictures of a small ant and a big house or a big ant and a small house. This time, the MCI and AD patients did not have a problem with the first part of the test -- they were able to choose the house over the ant when asked what was bigger. But if the images were incongruent -- the big ant seemed just as big as the small house -- they were confused, they answered incorrectly or took longer to arrive at a response.

Patients with MCI were functioning somewhere between the healthy people and those with AD. "When the decision was harder, their reaction time was slower," he said.

Would this damaged semantic system have an effect on everyday functions? To answer this question, investigators turned to the UCSD Skills Performance Assessment scale, a tool that they have been using in MCI and AD patients that is generally used to identify functional deficits in patients with schizophrenia. The test taps a person's ability to write a complex check or organize a trip to the zoo on a cold day.

This is actually a good test for figure out whether someone has problems with semantic knowledge. Semantic processing has its seat in the left temporal lobe. "The semantic system is organized in networks that reflect different types of relatedness or association," the investigators wrote in their study. "Semantic items and knowledge have been acquired remotely, often over many repetitions, and do not reflect recent learning."

Dr. Goldberg said the finding is critically important because it may be possible to strengthen these semantic processing connections through training. "It tells us that something is slowing down the patient and it is not episodic memory but semantic memory," he said. They will continue to study these patients over time to see if these semantic problems get worse as the disease advances.

In an accompanying editorial, David P. Salmon, PhD, of the Department of Neurosciences at the University of California in San Diego, said that the "semantic memory deficit demonstrated by this study adds confidence to the growing perception that subtle decline in this cognitive domain occurs in patients with amnestic mild cognitive impairment. Because the task places minimal demands on the effortful retrieval process, overt word retrieval, or language production, it also suggests that this deficit reflects an early and gradual loss of integrity of semantic knowledge."

He added that a "second important aspect of this study is the demonstration that semantic memory decrements in patients with mild cognitive impairment may contribute to a decline in the ability to perform usual activities of daily living."

The Relationship Mistake I'll Never Make Again - Huffington Post

I've never really been one to make a New Years resolution. I've always figured that if the need arose to join Weight Watchers, I'd try to get in there early so that by the time the January rush rolled in, I'd be the success story. "Just look at her now!" I'd be on the pamphlets.

That's sort of my approach to addressing most things that aren't exactly perfect about me. Most centrally, the fact that I am not in a relationship and would like to be. So for the past year rather than weight watching I have been trying my best to find true love. Only my search has been a two-steps-forward-one-step-back break dance. I figured that by this point I'd have stumbled head first into my J.Crew ad of love or at least not be waking up in strange beds with my hair matted to my face. No such luck. If you know me, though, you know that my search was probably doomed from the beginning, starting with the love business cards I created for myself and ending with getting fired from my three week stint as a date reporter.

"Let me ask you a legitimate question," my editor wrote after I'd emailed that I would rather sit at home and pick my cuticles than go out on a second date. "Are you excited about actually dating right now? Totally fine if you aren't, but I think it's something you seriously need to assess."

I'd been caught. Seriously, I don't know if I was ever that serious about any of it. I'm sure there were reasons: to do lists, pesky 2 AM "I really miss you text messages," and things about myself that I really wanted to be better. Also, I still had a twin bed. At the time, I didn't want to make room or even try. Well, I sort of tried...

I tried writing query letters to voodoo doctors, hoping that they could give me some of their juju. Sometimes I tried to go on normal dates with men who were normally interested in me. If anyone asked (or didn't) I regaled them with all the details of how hard I was trying. So if you were lucky enough to know me in the past year, you know how much I talked about myself and my love life. Never shut up about it. Everyone knew when I'd met someone, or stopped responding. Everybody knew when the sex was good, and when I wanted to hurl myself out of a car window.

Some of the guys gave me writing material, so I told myself it was worth it. There was the one who wrote me overly verbose, tequila-infused letters asking what it was that I wanted. There was the one whom I'd slept with one summer who I had the good fortune of running into on a Martha's Vineyard bound ferry, while vomiting into a bag. He and his girlfriend were wearing matching Sea Bands. There was the one who invited me on a top secret Valentine's Day date because I was the tragic single girl and thus couldn't be taken on a real Valentine's Day date that his friends might find out about. There was the one I always went back to. Always. There was the one who arrived with his own stories: model girlfriends, dinners with Mick Jagger, and yes, his marriage. They were always interesting. When it ended as every good story inevitably ends, I wasn't sad. I figured there would be another episode.

Until I was sad. It happened unexpectedly when one of my favorite stories nearly ran me over in an intersection driving home from the holidays with this real life girlfriend. I didn't expect to feel anything except annoyed that his dumb SUV was blocking the crosswalk. But when I arrived home that day, there were these gross tears. I shouldn't have even been upset: I'd told him he was boring and that I didn't want to date someone who ate chopped salads. But I was. Because for the first time it felt so much realer than how I had written it. He wasn't the heartbroken khaki suit who secretly still loved me but would be forced to settle for a life of boredom with someone who wasn't me. He had someone to take home for the holidays, while all I had were all my tales of love gone wrong.

It didn't click immediately -- what I'd been doing. I had to get drunk first, do a really nice walk of shame, and continue to talk about my love life for at least three more weeks. But after sitting in a sticky cab with a massive hangover and ripped tights, I think I got my resolution, so this year I've resolved to stop mutating my love life (or lack there of) into a fractured fairy tale. In fact, I think I will stop talking about it all together.

You're telling yourself that this is intuitive, right? Why has it taken me so long to learn not to kiss and tell? You've never believed you were the second coming of Carrie Bradshaw or Cinderella.

Lies. You totally have, even if you didn't take it quite as far as I did. You've posted photos to Facebook for the sole purpose of letting him know how freaking amazing you look, you've made your friends listen to you agonize over the subtext of his 'what are you doing' text message, and you've waited for the "Likes" to pop up when you change your status from single to in a relationship. It's cool, at least you didn't write a 1000 word essay about it.

But I think I've learned in the most mixed up way that love isn't just a really well written story. And most importantly, you don't really give it much of a chance when you turn everyone you meet into a potential Mr. Big.

So that it my resolution: shutting up. What's yours? How about to be more adventurous, to stop pretending or to give him (in spite of his oddities) a chance? I hope with all my heart that you give whatever changes you would like to make in the new year a fighting change. And I hope even more that when whatever you want this year arrives at your doorstep, you don't say a word about it. Just make room and let it in.

Are you making any relationship resolutions this year? Share them in the comments below.

    ISLAMABAD:?

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has asked all political parties to fulfill ?all legal requirements? before applying for election symbols to contest the next parliamentary elections slated for early next year.

According to a notification issued by the ECP on Friday, the legal requirements include: holding intra-party elections and submitting a statement of party accounts duly certified by a chartered accountant.

?Fresh applications will be invited from political parties at the time of the next general elections for the allotment of election symbols. Symbols will be allotted only to those political parties who fulfill the requirements of Articles 12 & 13 of the aforementioned order,? the ECP said.

Political parties which fail to submit their annual statement of accounts in accordance with terms of Article 13 of the said order or fail to submit the certificate with regard to intra-party elections in accordance with Article 12 of the order shall not be entitled to obtaining election symbols, according to the notification.

The requirement of holding party elections and submitting a statement of accounts has been flouted widely in the past. The law does mention these conditions but does not specify anything that makes the process meaningful.

The commission has also decided that all the political parties intending to contest elections would be asked to reapply for election symbols. With the registration of so many political parties in recent years, the commission is apparently short of symbols.

Neiman\'s Blog ? Secular research proves that Gay Marriage/Family ...

    neiman?????December 27, 2012

Considering so many western countries are moving rapidly to force Gay Marriage on their citizens, despite much opposition, it is interesting that the liberal leaders ignore the independent data and only subscribe to biased, pro-gay, liberal data and then insist it is a matter of equality. They insist gays have an equal right to marriage, even though they are not in any shape, manner or form qualified for such a role.

It is well known that gay families are in all ways deviant, their children by large percentages live a perverse lifestyle, more often than in other families, choosing homosexuality. They are living in families wherein sexual deviants are often present, besides their gay family members. The children are not growing up with two-parent, male-female role models and cannot relate to such relationships, causing them much harm.

Well, gay marriage will not be stopped, it is an institution the Devil uses to destroy marriage and family and undermine societies, especially in attacking the Christian Church, forcing them into silence that evil may reign on earth. Not one liberal will examine the scientific studies about the harm of homosexuality and gay marriage, as they are closed minded ? Christ must be defeated and that war is fought in the family, destroy the family and you destroy the Church.

Equal Marriage is ?fundamentally flawed? says new in-depth study

A new study of extensive world-wide research published today concludes that government plans to introduce same sex marriage (SSM) legislation in the near future are based on false premises and a deeply flawed understanding of both conventional marriage and gay relationships.

?The long-term impact of such legislation on our children?s up-bringing, on our health and welfare and on our liberties enshrined in law has not been acknowledged by SSM proponents,? says author R S Harris, ?nor in its rush has the government encouraged proper debate around these vital issues.?

?Our report is unashamedly academic and educational,? said AM?s Chris Sugden, ?but it is full of hard-hitting facts and evidence against gay marriage that SSM proponents dare not face and try to avoid.?

    The report concludes:

    * The concept of ?equal marriage? is fundamentally flawed as it presupposes a questionable notion of ?equality? and ignores the essential and defining components of conventional marriage.

    * Gay marriage falsely judges parenting roles as interchangeable.

    * Same-sex marriage wrongly assumes that the benefits of marriage are automatically transferable to same-sex couples who ?enter? the same institution.

    * There is no evidence that same-sex couples will benefit from the ?commitment device? invoked by marriage.

    * Gay marriage introduces a disturbing, unproven and socially risky new norm into society, that children do not need both a mother and father for optimal development, when all the evidence points the other way.

    * Same-sex parenting studies are fundamentally flawed in their sample size and methodology when measured against commonly accepted social science standards.

    * When same-sex couples create children through IVF, it is a grave injustice to the rights of children, as they are unable to know and be cared for by one or both of their natural parents.

    * In jurisdictions where same-sex marriage is already legal, this holds the status of legal fiction.

    * If ?love and commitment? are the sole criteria for marriage then alarming consequences ensue, such as the validation of incestuous relationships, as well as recognition of polygamous, polyamorous relationships, as has already begun to occur in countries with SSM.

    * Fear of causing offence makes society tread silently around disturbing medical data from both the UK and the US that, like smoking, homosexual activity is intrinsically unhealthy. For instance unlike the vaginal lining, the rectal lining is unable to withstand penetrative activity without medical damage. Take Your Life To The Next Level With These Useful Tips | Bob ...

The beginning of self improvement begins by admitting you need to improve. Here?s some self-help tips for you to try.

Focus on learning how to stay calm in difficult circumstances, rather than becoming irrational and emotional. If you learn how to keep a good head when you are in a stressful situation, you can get the confidence in order to succeed in anything you do! Take a few seconds to focus on your breathing.

    Sexual Capitol

An important new trait called sexual capitol is currently being researched. This is about gaining confidence about your looks, not about using your body as a tool. Not everyone is good in a social environment, though having sexual capitol can help in many aspects of life.

Find your personal values so you can create your self improvement strategy. It wouldn?t make sense to work on areas in your life that contradict your values. When your attitudes are changed, hard situations become much easier to control. Positive changes that you make in your life are more likely to stay with you if they coincide with your value system.

TIP! A great organizational system can help you track your progress. Break all your goals down into small components, and you will have an easier time achieving these small tasks quickly.

The first step towards personal development is learning how to be a leader. The key to being a leader is influence, according to most people. Examine yourself as a leader. Are there any events that have had an impact in your life? How did the events that took place have an effect on you? Evaluate attributes that you possess which contribute to your role as a team player. By examining these questions, you will be aware of how you can fit into a team setting.

You have to not only decide what you want out of life, you also have to take steps to get it. Sitting and thinking about the life you want will not get you that life. Take action on your dreams and do what you can to make them a reality.

It can be difficult to reach goals that are too hard or vague, and this may discourage you on your path to self improvement. Therefore, state a goal for yourself that is detailed and specific. Goals that are specifically defined will lead to targeted results.

Set reasonable, achievable goals for yourself. Figure out what you do and do not do well, and you will learn a lot about yourself.

Learn to recognize which obstacles are keeping you away from your goals. This can prove problematic for most folks. Identifying and acknowledging your weakest points is a crucial element in transforming them. If you get rid of the things that might stand in your way, you can find the way to clear your path.

It is almost impossible to have a happy, healthy mind when your body has been neglected entirely. Have healthy meals that are full of nutrients, and be sure to exercise as much as you can. If you have a strong body, you will have a strong mind.

TIP! When you want to improve yourself, you need goals. Don?t just think about them, either; write them down.

Your willpower can help you find more positive things in your life. Your attitude towards others will affect what happens to you. For this reason, it is important to wish only positive things for the people in your life. By having positive emotional energy, you?ll be less likely to experience being pulled down by negative feelings.

When beginning your self improvement plan, set attainable goals for the short term and long term. Goal setting is a vital part in having a positive outlook on your life.

    Complex Carbohydrates

TIP! We all make mistakes which includes making poor food choices once in a while. Allowing stressful situations to build can be as harmful as eating an unhealthy diet, and therefore, it is important to remind yourself to maintain perspective and your calm at all times.

When you are handling depression stay focused on the things you eat and eat more complex carbohydrates. If you do not have an adequate amount of complex carbohydrates in your diet, your serotonin can become depleted. Increase complex carbs through nuts, whole rice, beans and fruits.

Be respectful no matter how much, or how little, power the people you talk to wield over you. Treat people well, it says a lot about what kind of person you are.

Give some tips a chance and if you notice any change in feelings or your thoughts make a note about it. Cut yourself some slack.

How much should I have in personal savings before I start investing ...

I am 24 years old and make $35,000 per year and I currently have $4,000 in personal savings. My company only matches contributions after a year of employment but I was thinking of starting my retirement fund before then. Is $4,000 enough of a cushion to start putting money towards my retirment fund?

Bumblebees do best where there is less pavement and more floral diversity

Dec. 24, 2012 ? Landscapes with large amounts of paved roads and impervious construction have lower numbers of ground-nesting bumblebees, which are important native pollinators, a study from The University of Texas at Austin and the University of California, Berkeley shows.

The study suggests that management strategies that reduce the local use of pavement and increase natural habitat within the landscape could improve nesting opportunities for wild bees and help protect food supplies around the word.

The study also suggests that increasing the number of species-rich flowering patches in suburban and urban gardens, farms and restored habitats could provide pathways for bees to forage and improve pollination services over larger areas.

The findings have major implications for global pollinator conservation on a rapidly urbanizing planet.

"We are potentially in a pollinator crisis," said Shalene Jha, lead author and assistant professor of biology at The University of Texas at Austin. "Honey bees are declining precipitously, and wild bees have also been exhibiting population declines across the globe. Native bees provide critical pollination services for fruit, nut, fiber and forage crops. Understanding how bees move around the landscape can help us both preserve biodiversity and improve crop yields."

Animal pollination is estimated to be worth over $200 billion in global crop yields.

For the research, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Jha and senior author Claire Kremen, a professor at UC Berkeley's Department of Environmental Science, Policy and Management, studied a native California bumblebee, Bombus vosnesenskii, in habitats across exurban areas, farms and nature reserves.

In addition to finding that pavement negatively affects the bees, the scientists discovered that:

    • Bees will move longer distances to find patches of flowers that are rich in species; it's not floral density that determines how far a bumblebee will fly, but floral diversity.
    • Bees will also forage further away from their home nest if the surrounding landscape is less heterogeneous. "In some ways, it's a bet-hedging strategy," said Jha. "If the landscape is composed of consistently dense flowering patches, bees take a risk and forage farther afield to find species-rich patches."

"In combination with earlier work showing that bumblebees have become rare in agricultural landscapes, our study suggests that farmers could promote these valuable pollinators by diversifying crop types and by planting cover crops and flowering hedgerows to enhance floral diversity," said Kremen.

Though it may seem obvious that pavement and ground nesting don't mix, Jha said that our understanding of the effects of pavement and urban growth on native bees has been largely anecdotal.

"Using genetic tools, we can now estimate the number of colonies in an area," said Jha, who began this work as a postdoctoral researcher at UC Berkeley. "This is helping us better understand how wild pollinators live and move across large, diverse landscapes."

Bumblebees nest in the ground, and each colony contains a queen and a force of workers. As with honeybees, all of the bumblebee workers are sisters who spend some of their time flying around searching for flowers from which to collect pollen and nectar to feed the larvae back in the hive.

Unlike honeybees, which are not native, bumblebees do not make harvestable honey. They do, however, provide important pollination services to plants.

"Bumblebees are among the most effective native pollinators," said Jha. "They are large and can carry a lot of pollen. They also vibrate or 'buzz' flowers with their bodies and thus are excellent at extracting pollen and moving it from plant to plant."

To study the bumblebees, Jha did not scour the landscape for nests in the ground, which has proved in the past to be very difficult, especially over large areas. Instead, she analyzed the genetic relatedness of bees foraging in the landscape.

If bees collected in an area were genetically identified as sisters, they came from the same colony. Unrelated bees came from different colonies. Jha used this information, plus the bees' locations, to estimate the number of bee colonies in an area and determine how far afield the individual bees were foraging.

Thatcher papers show fascination with Reagan visit

(AP) ? ? It is not often that the president of the United States needs to seek fashion advice.

But when Ronald Reagan was getting ready for a visit to England as a guest of Queen Elizabeth II in June 1982, his people had an important question for the Brits: Just what does one wear to go riding with the queen in the magnificent horse country surrounding Windsor Castle?

The answer: Something smart, but casual, of course. Riding boots, breeches and a turtleneck sweater would do fine ? no need for formal riding attire.

The fashion inquiry is but one tidbit contained in nearly 500 pages of formerly Confidential documents relating to the Reagan visit being made public Friday by Britain's National Archives. The dossier shows the British government ? led by Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher ? to be extraordinarily interested in pleasing the relatively new president on his two-day visit. British leaders also fretted that perennial cross-Channel rivals might triumph in the tug-of-war for presidential face time in a visit that had to be sandwiched between two summits on the European mainland.

The papers show that top Reagan adviser Michael Deaver had a way of annoying his British counterparts with last-minute changes and requests, and also surprised them with some of his objectives. Deaver, remembered as a shrewd image-builder, said he wanted Reagan to be photographed outside of formal venues, so he wouldn't be seen "exclusively in white tie" at palace functions, even suggesting that Reagan go to a village pub to soak up the atmosphere

There were raised eyebrows, and bruised feelings, when the White House failed to formally reply in a timely fashion to an official invitation from the queen ? the sort of invite that usually commands respect and a prompt reply the world over. The queen's invite was left to languish for weeks and weeks, something that the British believe is simply Not Done.

"It is really for the president to respond to her invitation, which he has not done personally, something that I have pointed out several times here," writes Nicholas Henderson, Britain's ambassador to Washington, in a memo to the British Foreign Office. "As you know those surrounding the president are not deliberately rude: It is simply that they are not well-organized and do not have experience of this sort of thing."

William F. Sittman, a special assistant to Reagan who was involved in planning the trip, told The Associated Press that it is possible the delay in responding to the queen was caused by first lady Nancy Reagan's insistence on consulting her astrologer before travel plans were finalized.

"You have to remember that Mrs. Reagan was very strict about his schedule, and she would consult her astrologer to see if this was the right time to travel," he said. "Sometimes she would back up departures."

The documents make clear that Europe's leaders were desperate for Reagan's attention at a time of high Cold War tensions. A memo from U.K. Cabinet Secretary Robert Armstrong on Feb. 5 expresses concern that a gala, summit-closing dinner at the palace of Versailles outside Paris could delay Reagan's arrival in London. But he warns against pressuring the Reagan entourage to skip the meal at Versailles' Hall of Mirrors because "that would not please the President of the French Republic."

Reagan's aides also worried the British by suggesting the president might have to skip the stop in London because accepting it might anger the Germans, who had offered a similar invitation. But feelings are smoothed over a bit when the Americans assure the British contingent that the Germans are not America's top priority.

"Eagleburger emphasized how much the president himself wanted to go to London," stresses one confidential memo from the British ambassador, referring to senior U.S. diplomat Lawrence Eagleburger. "There should be no doubt about that. Eagleburger also said that at the moment the Germans were not America's favorite allies."

The prospect of a chance to relax from international summitry with a bit of horseback riding with the queen seems to have helped carry the day for the Brits. Asked for the president's favorite type of horse, British planners are told simply that he wants a thoroughbred. He ended up riding Centennial, one of the queen's favorites, and wearing a perfectly fitted sports jacket above his sweater, going for an old-time Hollywood look he carried off with ease.

Much of the actual visit was devoted to pomp and pageantry, or to relaxation, but Reagan did make one speech of consequence. He became the first American president to address a meeting of both houses of Parliament and used the occasion to trumpet his distaste for the Soviet Union, calling it an economic catastrophe.

He said Marxism-Leninism would be left on the ash-heap of history ? a prediction that would come to pass in the following decade.

Obama cuts vacation short to deal with fiscal crisis

HONOLULU (Reuters) - President Barack Obama is cutting short his Hawaiian holiday to leave for Washington on Wednesday to address the unfinished "fiscal cliff" negotiations with Congress, the White House said on Tuesday.

As the clock ticks toward a January 1 deadline, efforts to avert a sharp rise in taxes and deep spending cuts have stalled, worrying world financial markets.

Obama and congressional lawmakers left Washington on Friday for the Christmas holidays with talks to avert the fiscal disaster in limbo.

When Obama arrives back in Washington early on Thursday, the focus will shift to the U.S. Senate after Republicans in the House of Representatives failed to pass their own budget measures last week.

Obama is expected to turn to a trusted Democratic ally, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, to help craft a quick deal.

White House aides began discussing details of the year-end budget measure with Senate Democratic counterparts early this week, a senior administration official said on Monday

The president will also need at least tacit approval from Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell to insure Republicans will permit passage of what is likely to be a stripped down bill that prevents taxes from rising on all Americans.

The measure may not, however, contain difficult spending cuts both parties had sought to speed deficit reduction. It is unclear how the president will seek to address the draconian across-the-board government spending reductions set to go into effect early in the year without a deal.

McConnell, who is up for re-election in 2014, has been a cautious participant in the process. His spokesman has said it was now up to Democrats in the Senate to make the next move.

Once clear of the Senate, the fiscal cliff legislation must also win enough bipartisan support to pass the House of Representatives, which failed last week to approve Speaker John Boehner's proposal to extend tax breaks for all Americans earning less than $1 million a year.

Conservative Republicans balked at any tax increases at all and withdrew support for the measure, which never came to a vote. Some Republican votes will be needed to pass any Senate bill.

    BIG DAY THURSDAY

The next session of the Senate is set for Thursday, but the issues presented by the fiscal cliff - across-the-board tax increases and indiscriminate reductions in government spending - were not on the calendar.

The House has nothing on its schedule for the week, but members have been told they could be called back with 48 hours notice, making a Thursday return a theoretical possibility.

Obama and his family arrived in Hawaii early on Saturday and have devoted their time to spending the Christmas holiday together. First Lady Michelle Obama and the couple's two daughters are to remain in Hawaii, suggesting the president hopes to rejoin them if a deal is struck

Before the talks ran into trouble, Obama had originally been expected to stay in Hawaii - where he was born - until well into the first week of January.

But many observers are pessimistic that lawmakers, who have repeatedly come close to agreement only to see negotiations collapse, can wrap up a deal in the few days left before the end-of-year cut-off point.

The impact of a blown deadline would likely be first seen in financial markets, which wobbled last week after House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner's "Plan B" tax and spending effort fell flat.

Obama had offered a deal early last week that would have let tax rates rise for those making more than $400,000 a year, a higher threshold than the $250,000 income level he originally wanted to subject to higher tax rates. However, Boehner was unimpressed with the offer and pursued his alternative instead.

The president appears to have set consideration of fiscal cliff issues aside during his four days in Hawaii. His only public events have been to attend the funeral of long-time Hawaiian Senator Daniel Inouye on Sunday and a Christmas Day visit to soldiers at a Marine Corps base near the vacation home his family is using in Kailua, Hawaii.

He has spent his time with family and friends, with excursions to play golf, exercise, go hiking or to the beach.

The Need for Financial Planning for Special-Needs Kids

    ?

There are many types of financial worries, but probably none as relentless as the costs of treating and supporting a special needs child.

A 2008 MassMutual/Easter Seals study focusing on autism spectrum disorders (ASD),? a range of conditions that can lead to problems with socialization, communication and behavior, discovered the following:

    • Nearly three-fourths of parents are worried about their children?s financial future after they?re no longer able to care for them.
    • Only 40 percent of children with ASD had designated a guardian or created a will; only 20 percent have created a special needs trust.
    • Seventy-four percent of parents with autistic children do not have a life care plan for their children.
    • Health insurers pay for services only 39 percent of the time, leaving families with autistic children to take on more debt than parents who don?t have kids with disabilities.

    ?

According to a study released in December by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, an average of one in 110 children have ASD. For parents affected by these conditions or other physical, emotional or developmental disabilities in their children, financial planning should be part of the response. That?s why it?s a good idea to bring in trained expertise, including financial, legal, tax and estate help shortly after diagnosis. A financial planner is a good first step.

There are planners who specialize in special needs issues for family members of all ages. PlannerSearch, a service provided by the Financial Planning Association?, can help sort planners by expertise and location. Here are some common financial planning activities that parents of special needs kids should explore:

The retirement and estate plans should come first: Even though one or both parents undergo a massive lifestyle change to support their disabled child ? a responsibility not unlike a second career ? they can?t forget planning for retirement and healthcare needs. It?s very easy for parents to sacrifice their lifestyle needs when a child is sick or disabled, but personal planning is essential, and it should come before planning activities for the child.

This personal planning needs to go well beyond retirement savings. Parents need immediate estate planning to make sure their assets are properly disbursed for the specialized care of their minor or adult children when they die ? an event that can happen at any time. The first step of the process is making a will with specific directives for the child as well as yourself if you are incapacitated and can?t make decisions for the child. A financial planner can walk parents through this parallel process of personal financial planning and planning for the child.

Then move on to the special needs child: A child can have no more than $2,000 in total assets to qualify for federal benefits, so special planning is necessary. It?s particularly important to make sure that the child not be named a direct beneficiary of any assets that would put him over the $2,000 figure at any point in time, so it?s important that proceeds from life insurance, IRAs, annuities, 401(k) s, 403(b) s and any other inherited assets be placed in something called a Special Needs Trust.

Special Needs Trusts can be set up to accumulate, manage and disburse monies for any child with a disability. (There are also Community Trusts, which are trusts set up by nonprofit institutions that perform the same function ? see which option fits best.) The trust itself becomes the beneficiary of any inherited assets, and with very few limitations won?t affect the child?s eligibility for government benefits. Parents also need to consider whether or not to go through the guardianship/conservatorship process to take legal/financial control of their children?s lives. In the case of a minor child, generally guardianship or conservatorship will terminate when the child turns 18 or, in some states, upon marriage if the child marries before age 18. Then, obviously, parents need to decide whether a disabled child needs a trustee other protections to carry him through adulthood and beyond their deaths.

Depending on your situation, it?s a good idea to research a supplemental needs trust, which are written to provide benefits to and protect the assets of physically and mentally disabled individuals while allowing them to continue their qualifications for a variety of government-provided healthcare benefits under Medicaid.

It?s best to locate attorneys who specialize in special needs issues to write these trust agreements and coordinate with your planner and tax and estate professionals.

Don?t forget your other kids: When a disabled child becomes part of a family, parents have an added responsibility to make sure their non-disabled children aren?t ignored. That goes for financial issues as well. Because disabled children represent a significant financial burden, it?s doubly important to get planning help to make sure you can afford college and other essentials for the rest of your offspring.

Real Estate Ideas That Can Have You Buying Like A Pro - Maynas Eric

Is the subject of real estate one that you think you know everything about? There?s so many small things you need to know. Some of the most expert buyers still learn new things all the time. This article is here to help you with tips that you can use when thinking about what kind of real estate you want to buy.

It is a good idea to retain an attorney who specializes in real estate when you are involved with foreclosure purchases. Unexpected complications are especially troublesome in foreclosure-related deals, and consulting a legal professional should be considered. The proper legal representation can save you money and headaches over the long run.

Monitor residences in pre-foreclosure status. If you have lots of time to devote to finding your investment property, then pre foreclosures may be the way to go for you. Properties classified as pre-foreclosures are simply homes that are delinquent and at risk of going through the foreclosure process in the near future. You can get a lender?s list of pre-foreclosures, or place advertisements stating that you will pay cash to buy homes. However you locate the owner of a pre-foreclosure property, you need to figure out how much he or she owes on the mortgage and make an offer a little higher than that amount. This will be a great bargain for you, since most do not owe the house?s full market value.

TIP! It is easier to begin the purchase of real estate when you are organized. Dedicate a notebook just to the information you gather online, from the newspaper, from friends and from your agent.

Consult a qualified real estate professional before investing in a property. These people will have resources that may not be directly available to you. Most brokers have useful tools such as specialized software that can search and sort through MLS listings. The use of the MLS by a Realtor will allow search criteria that is unavailable through doing a search on you own.

If you are seriously considering buying a home, take the time to measure it. You need to make sure public records for square footage match the listing. If these numbers do not match up closely, you should not buy the property or go to the proper authority to have it fixed.

Always get an inspection of the home you wish to buy. You don?t want to discover after you buy that your house needs a lot of renovating. This will not only cost you extra money, you might have to find suitable living arrangements while the home is being repaired.

TIP! Be careful about purchasing a home when your job is uncertain. Once your signature is on the dotted line, you?ve agreed to be responsible for the monthly payment, regardless of your circumstances.

Buy a house with more than one fireplace only if your climate necessitates it. It is a real hassle to keep up with cleaning multiple fireplaces and they are rarely used anyway.

If you are considering renting a home or apartment that has a garden, don?t sign a lease agreement until you find out from the landlord who is responsible for tending the garden. Sometimes rentals require that you handle it yourself, or for you to hire a gardener or yard person. Other places still will offer this service as an added monthly fee.

When you officially decide to purchase a home, don?t forget all the other options that are available. It can take a long time to find that property that can fit your strategy and goals.

TIP! When you?re ready to buy a home, you?re aware of the asking price. However, figuring out your offer is most important.

When looking to purchase a new home, it is very important to avoid the trap of judging a house based on its decor. You should focus your shopping comparisons on the condition that the house is in and whether it has solid construction. If you buy a home primarily because it has structural details that appeal to you, you may fail to recognize critical flaws that can end up costing you thousands of dollars down the road.

Don?t purchase properties before thoroughly researching them. Even for rental property, you should look at some important features before purchasing. The first is whether the property is sustainable. Is this property in good condition and does it just require minimum upkeep? Equally as important is the location of the property. For a major portion of rental properties, location is a paramount consideration. Consider the needs of your tenants in regards to shopping and access to service providers. Lastly, average income in the area is also important. If the average income is high, your property will attract a certain type of renters. You will find location to be more of a concern in areas where rents are low.

TIP! During your first meeting with an agent make sure to ask all the questions which are pertinent to your situation. Some questions to consider is are you a buyer?s agent, a seller?s agent or a dual agent.

If you?re thinking about relocating, you may want to consider looking online at the neighborhood of the house you?re thinking of purchasing. There is a wealth of information available on the Internet, even for small cities and towns. Make sure that you can live comfortably in a town by researching the population, unemployment rate and salary ranges.
